Trondheim’s former main post office, a 1911 Art Nouveau landmark by architect Karl Norum, has been transformed into PoMo, the city’s new museum for modern and contemporary art. The institution positions itself as open, informal, and international, aiming to make art accessible to both first-time visitors and specialists alike.
Naming and logo
The museum was initially named Posten Moderne (The Modern Post), a nod to its origins as a postal building. Early in the identity process, the name was shortened to PoMo—a more compact and memorable name that sits comfortably alongside other contemporary art institutions.
The logotype is flexible and can be used in various configurations, with or without the museum’s claim: A Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art in Trondheim.
Brand Identity
The visual system is modular and flexible. The concept is built around the idea of literal openness, reflecting both the opening of a new museum and its values of inclusivity and approachability. The colour palette reinforces these qualities, being both broad and vibrant.
Website
The website was designed to be clear and easy to navigate, while also providing generous space for large visuals and editorial content. It serves as both a functional tool and a digital expression of the museum’s identity. The site was developed in collaboration with Increo and Metódica.
Corporate and Merchandise pieces
In addition to digital assets, we designed a range of corporate materials for use within the museum, as well as merchandise for visitors. These items extend the identity across physical touchpoints and offer opportunities for engagement beyond the museum visit.
Opening Campaign
To mark the museum’s opening, we created a city-wide campaign shown at Trondheim Airport, on bus stops, and across billboards. The theme was “Open” — both a reference to the museum’s launch and its inclusive values. Messages like Open to you, Open to ideas, creativity, imagination, diversity appeared in both static and animated formats, including across PoMo’s social media channels, inviting people in.
Opening Exhibition Catalogue
We designed the exhibition catalogue for Postcards from the Future, PoMo’s opening show. The book brings together artworks from the museum’s new collection, international loans, and newly commissioned short stories. The design follows the themes of the exhibition, balancing structure and openness to create space for both image and text.
The building
PoMo is located in Trondheim’s former main post office, a 1911 Art Nouveau building designed by architect Karl Norum. After more than a century of use, the building has been carefully transformed into a museum for modern and contemporary art. The renovation was led by architect Erik Langdalen and designer India Mahdavi, who reimagined the space while preserving key historical features. The result is a vibrant, welcoming environment that bridges heritage and contemporary culture.
