“Perfect Paul” is one of the three tone options that the human voice synthesiser Speech Plus Call Texts 5010 offered, alongside the “Kit the Kid” child voice and the feminine “Beautiful Betty”. Invented in 1988, it was based on the MITalk algorithm, developed at the MIT in the early 80s by the researcher Dennis Klatt. Despite the huge advances in vocal synthesis achieved in the last decades, the rudimentary “Perfect Paul” gave voice, until his last day, to the astrophysicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking.
